There are many reasons why your dentist recommends flossing your teeth and brushing them at least twice a day. It is not just for you to have a pretty, white smile. Dentists want to help you avoid painful and expensive conditions and procedures that are a result of poor dental hygiene. One of the conditions dentists wish you to avoid is gum disease. Gum disease is very common. In fact, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), nearly half of people aged 30 years and older have some form of gum disease. Fortunately, the early stages of gum disease are highly treatable and easily reversed. Advanced gum disease can cause significant issues to your mouth, including tissue death and bone loss. However, gum disease doesn’t just affect the mouth. Without treatment, gum disease can wreak havoc on your entire body.

You probably know that brushing, flossing, and visiting the dentist regularly are crucial to your oral health. But your diet has more of an impact on your smile than you may realize. Foods like candy and those with a lot of acids can increase the impact of tooth decay. But the following foods help to keep you r smile healthy. Fresh Fruits and Vegetables Fresh fruits and vegetables are great for your whole body, not just your oral health. Many raw fruits and vegetables are filled with water and various nutrients. Carrots especially contain a lot of vitamin C, calcium, and keratins. All of these things are especially great for your teeth. May fresh fruits and vegetables are hard and fibrous. They take a lot of chewing to break down and digest. The more you chew on something, the more saliva is released into your mouth. Saliva is essential for washing away bacteria and food particles from your teeth. Celery is the closest thing you can get to natural dental floss, getting between your teeth to clean things out. Water Hands down, water is the best beverage for you to drink. It assists saliva in washing away harmful bacteria and food particles from your smile. It doesn’t stain your teeth and it doesn’t have any things like sugar or acid to cause problems with your teeth. If you’re drinking tap water in the United States, you also probably have the benefit of fluoride. Most water has a supplemental amount of fluoride in it. Fluoride strengthens the enamel on teeth, making them stand up better to tooth decay and other problems. Dairy Aside from water, milk is the best thing you can drink for your teeth. It has a lot of calcium and other elements that help strengthen your teeth. Calcium in particular is crucial for increasing bone density. Milk can also lower the amount of acid in your mouth, with helps to fight tooth decay. Cheese also reduces the acid level in your mouth and contains important elements. When you chew it, it acts like fresh produce in that it produces more saliva. Like other dairy products, yogurt is high in calcium as well. But it’s also rich in probiotics, which help to protect you against gum disease and even bad breath. Nuts There are so many different nut varieties and all of them contain different nutrients. Almonds, Brazil nuts, and cashews are some of the best ones when it comes to your teeth. They help fight off the bacteria that cause tooth decay and gum disease . Peanuts and walnuts also help to stimulate saliva and contain a variety of nutrients. Sugar-Free Gum Gum that’s saturated with sugar isn’t the best for your teeth. But sugar-free gum is actually beneficial. You’re constantly chewing and the texture of the gum helps to clean out between teeth and other hard-to-reach areas. Saliva production is increased the whole time you’re chewing gum as well.

Dental implants are an excellent choice for long-term tooth replacement, as they look like and require merely the same care you should already be providing to your natural teeth. But how long will your dental implant last? The answer to this question depends largely on your lifestyle and overall dental hygiene. The technology of dental implants has greatly advanced over the last ten to twenty years so that implant failures due to rejection or functionality issues have become increasingly rare. Pre-existing medical conditions, diseases, and implant misuse are the most likely culprits when an implant does fail.

Anyone who has ever experienced dental pain knows that it’s very unpleasant. Feeling pain is not normal and can point to a serious problem that needs to be addressed. If your teeth hurt, it is always a good idea to schedule an appointment with your dentist as soon as possible. Your dentist can perform a thorough diagnostic examination and answer the frustrating question you might have, why do my teeth hurt? Dr. Leah Romay of Baltimore Dental Co. would like to help you find out why. It can be a number a reasons, but here are the most common: Cavity Causing Tooth Pain A cavity is simply a hole in your tooth caused by decay of your enamel due to bacteria. Cavities can create sensitivity that eventually leads to tooth pain. Cavities are easiest to treat when they are still small at which point the tooth can still be saved. This is usually done with a composite resin filling that “fills in” the cavity (hence the name) and prevents further access to the bacteria. Damaged or Lost Filling Sometimes a filling can fall out or be damaged, which will cause issues with your bite, leading to pain. A visit to your dentist can determine what needs to be done to eliminate the pain. Teeth Grinding/Clenching/TMJ You may find yourself bearing down on your teeth during the day, or wake up with a sore jaw, which is a good indication you are clenching or grinding your teeth at night. Your dentist can offer solutions to help save your teeth from excess wear and tear, as well as painful headaches, toothaches and jaw pain. Abscessed Tooth A dental abscess is a condition when infection sets in at the tooth’s roots. It is extremely painful and only a dentist visit can successfully treat it. Antibiotics must be prescribed or administered and the tooth treated to prevent re-infection. Failure to address it can lead to a widespread infection that affects the heart, brain and other internal organs and their functioning . Wisdom Teeth Coming In When your wisdom teeth begin to erupt, they can cause a great deal of pain, swelling, and jaw stiffness. Your dentist can determine if the teeth are coming in properly or if they should be removed. Injury Injury caused by such things as contact sports or an accident can cause any number of problems including a “bruised” or deep discoloring of the tooth, a broken tooth, or total loss of one or more teeth. Temperature Sensitivity When the underlying layer of the tooth, called the dentin, is exposed due to cracks in the enamel or the recession of the gums, your teeth may become sensitive to either hot or cold temperatures, or both. Orthodontic Treatment When you have your braces adjusted, you are likely to experience some level of tooth pain. This is normal and using an over-the-counter pain medicine, or if the issue is caused by the hardware itself, a little ball of dental wax should do the trick. Teeth Whitening Most people will feel some discomfort after a professional teeth-whitening treatment, but the pain should resolve within a day. Talk to your dentist if it is too painful or problematic.

Even though you may already be brushing twice daily as recommended by Glyndon dentist Dr. Leah Romay and dentists worldwide, you may not be doing enough to prevent tooth decay and gum disease. Although brushing is certainly an important part of your oral hygiene regimen, flossing is equally important to maintaining your oral health. Brushing only removes the bacteria and particles forming plaque that are easiest to reach. When saliva and food particles combine, plaque is created. Plaque is a sticky but clear and colorless substance that attaches to your teeth and it is the favorite food of oral bacteria. This bacteria finds a fertile environment in your mouth and can begin to eat away at your tooth enamel once it finishes the plaque. This eventually leads to cavities.

Do you curr ently have dentures, but are tired of dealing with messy denture adhesives and slippage? Are you experiencing pain due to a broken or severely cracked tooth? Maybe you’re considering dental implants and wondering if they would solve these problems all at once for you? No matter which situation you’re in, Dr. Leah Romay at Baltimore Dental Co. in Glyndon, MD, would like you to be educated about dental implants to discover whether they can be a solution for your dental problems. So join us as we uncover 6 important warning signs that you may need dental implants. 1. You have a severely cracked tooth or a broken tooth. If you have a cracked or broken tooth, a dental crown or implant may be your best options to restore the tooth. While dentists try their best to save as much of the natural tooth structure as possible, if the tooth is damaged beyond repair, the best option might be a tooth extraction and a dental implant to replace the problem tooth. If an implant is needed, rest assured, it will look and function just like your natural teeth. 2. You are missing one or more of your natural teeth. Having gaps in your smile where you are missing teeth can be embarrassing and cause you to be self-conscious about smiling, talking or eating in public. A dental implant will not only fill in the space where your natural tooth was once located but it will look and feel just like your natural teeth too. 3. You have loose-fitting partials or a loose-fitting denture. Loose-fitting dentures or partials can be exasperating to deal with everyday. Implants are an excellent alternative to dentures and partials. With an implant, you will no longer have to worry about your dentures becoming loose throughout the day or feeling self-conscious that your dentures will fall out in public while talking or eating. 4. You are starting to experience bone loss (in the jaw area). Dental implants can actually aid in the prevention of bone loss in your jawbone. This is because the implant screw that gets surgically placed in the socket of the jawbone and acts as the artificial tooth root is made of titanium or zirconium. These materials naturally bond with the bone tissue in a process called osseointegration, which enables the implant roots to stimulate jaw bone growth just like the natural tooth roots would, lessening the chance of the bone deteriorating over time. 5. You have a sunken-in look to your facial appearance. Did you ever notice the sunken-in or caved-in look that some denture-wearers have on a daily basis? Unfortunately, this is a common problem for patients with patients who wear dentures due to bone loss as you grow older. Because dentures do not stimulate fresh bone growth as implants do, the bone continues to deteriorate over time, resulting in the sunken-in, caved-in appearance. Dental implants solve this problem by stimulating bone growth in the jaw around the implant (See #4 above for details). 6. You have a tooth that cannot be saved. Sometimes a severely decayed or infected tooth cannot be saved or fixed. Your dentist can make this determination after a thorough examination. If he or she determines the problem tooth cannot be repaired or fixed, it may need to be extracted. In this case a dental implant might be the best option to replace it as they look, feel and function just like your nat ural teeth.

You just can’t underestimate how important our teeth are to our health and wellbeing. We use them to eat which nourishes our bodies and helps us grow strong and stay healthy. They also create our smile which is a huge part of making a good first impression on the people that we meet. People grow two complete sets of teeth in their lifetimes: primary (baby) teeth and secondary (adult/permanent) teeth. Although they are sometimes called permanent teeth, they will only last as long as you take care of them. The most common threat to the health and longevity of your teeth are cavities.

May 22, 2025
As we age, our teeth begin to show signs of wear and tear. These cracks, gaps, chips, discoloration, and misalignments may cause us to feel self-conscious and maybe we stop smiling as freely as we should. You may look at your smile and be overwhelmed by all the different issues. Maybe you’re dreading the amount of work that you’ll need to have the smile you want. Dental veneers could be a treatment option to correct these problems in just a few office visits with just one procedure instead of multiple.
